My role in conservation
Conservationist & supporter
About me
A wildlife biologist by formation, I spent my professional career in medical education. However, conservation of wild places and their species was always important to me. Since the need for support vastly exceeds available funds, identifying particularly valuable conservation targets is critical. The EDGE concept of the Zoological Society of London rates species by “irreplaceability”, allowing to choose high-value conservation targets. 1wild Foundation uses this approach to pick projects. If we manage to raise awareness among other donors and wardens of the wild, we can help many more precious species survive (i.e. preserve vast amounts of threatened evolutionary history).
My conservation target (species name)
Species that benefit from 1wild Foundation.
I also do some volunteer work on takhi (Przewalski's horse, primordial wild horse), EDGE Rank 136 / 585 mammals. Formerly EW (extinct in the wild), now EN (endangered).
My project location
Bij Altay, Govi-Altai, Mongolia
My project in brief
The takhi reintroduction programme (now in its 33rd year) aims at re-establishing a viable wild population of this equid in its last known refuge in the wild. The programme also protects the Mongolian swath of the Dzungarian Gobi, a unique biome with many desert-adapted and endangered species, including the Asiatic Wild Ass (khulan), the Saxaul bush and the critically endangered Bogeda Snow Lotus.
My project NEEDs
Additional awareness and donations for protecting the last caballine wild horse and its habitat.
My priorities and quantities
Awareness-building and fundraising for
- the takhi (primordial wild horse) reintroduction programme in the strictly protected Great Gobi B reserve
- countering key threats to reintroduced takhi (habitat degradation, livestock pathogens, weather extremes, and hybridization)
- maintaining the reserve as a key refuge for khulan and goitered gazelle
- halting the degradation and fragmentation of Eurasian steppes and their flora and fauna
My conservation ACTS
1) Establishment and alimentation of 1wild Foundation.
2) Takhi reintroduction programme (www.savethewildhorse.org): updating donor community through newsletters
ACTS I offer to other conservationists
Financial support for EDGE species, keystone species, EDGE and biodiversity hotspots

About me
I am a carnivore EDGE species, Rank 260, status Endangered (IUCN)
My conservation target (species name)
Panthera tigris
My project location
Sundarban National Park (West Bengal), Gosaba, West Bengal, India
My project in brief
Long-term survival by hunting and successful reproduction
My project NEEDs
Human conservation engagement
My priorities and quantities
My top priority is intact habitats, as large and connected as possible. Most urgently I need poaching to be stopped and gentle conservation tourism to be increased so locals get an income from my presence.
My conservation ACTS
I engage in ecosystem conservation by keeping sambar and other herbivores in check, thus enabling forest rejuvenation
ACTS I offer to other conservationists
Awe & beauty; I also offer free expertise on deer hunting and prime survival skills
